ORAL SURGERY
Many dental concerns are resolved during routine exams, cleanings, and procedures for fillings. But if you have advanced problems with your teeth or gums, you may need oral surgery. Oral surgery can be used to remove broken or infected teeth, wisdom teeth removal, impacted teeth exposure, tooth extractions and bone grafting.
Dr. Daniel Wank, DDS is an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Specialist in New York, NY. with over 35 years of experience.
Oral Surgery Specialties
Tooth Extraction
A single tooth may need to be removed due to injury, decay, or disease. Tooth extraction is also a common oral surgery procedure associated with other dental treatments. Dr. Wank will advise against removing a healthy tooth unless necessary. While always preferable to save a natural tooth, extraction may be the only option to restore oral health. He will examine every possibility of restoring a natural tooth before an extraction.
A Single Tooth (or Multiple Teeth) May be Recommended for:
• Dental crowding
• Periodontal Disease
• Tooth Decay
• Restore Oral Health
At your consultation, he will review the tooth extraction procedure and answer any questions answered. If replacement is a part of your treatment plan, Dr. Wank will discuss your options for tooth replacement, such as dental implants.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to come in. They can be found at the very back of the mouth. Most people do not have enough room for four more molars; therefore wisdom teeth are prone to complications like infection, dental crowding, decay, cysts and tumors.
Impacted wisdom teeth, are prone to decay and inflammation of the gums. This is because their location makes it hard to brush and floss effectively. Therefore, if wisdom teeth are left to erupt and cause complications, treatments to fix the issue can be painful, expensive, and time-consuming.
Benefits of Wisdom Teeth Removal
• Protect your oral health
• As a preventive measure
• Prevent costly future treatments
• Reduce the risk of oral disease
Wisdom teeth removal is a very common procedure. As an oral surgeon, Dr. Wank will remove your wisdom teeth with compassionate care and tailored solutions to suit each patient’s distinct condition.
Impacted Tooth Exposure
A tooth is impacted when it gets stuck beneath the gum tissue or only partially emerges into the mouth. Wisdom teeth are the most commonly impacted teeth, but any tooth is susceptible to impaction. An impacted canine tooth requires oral surgery to help it into its proper position. The presence of swollen gum tissue, tenderness, redness, or drainage in the area around the tooth may indicate impaction.
A tooth may become impacted for a variety of reasons, including:
• Dental crowding
•Lack of teeth
• Extra teeth
• Growths or tumors
As a dentist and oral surgeon, Dr. Wank can confirm if you have an impacted tooth. If your tooth is impacted, he will discuss with you the best course of action to be taken.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting is a procedure that promotes new bone growth to add width or height to a desired area. In oral surgery, bone grafting may be required before undergoing an additional procedure, such as dental implant placement. Most bone deficits can be successfully treated with grafting. Bone grafting may use bone from the patient’s own jaw or from a tissue bank.
There are several types of grafting procedures available depending on what type of bone restoration is needed. As an oral surgeon, Dr. Daniel Wank will determine which bone grafting procedure is needed.
